HB501: An act requiring the teaching of cardiopulmonary resuscitation in public schools.

Posted in

A bi-partisan bill in congress, HB501 "requires every pupil to satisfactorily complete a course in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) before completion of the 10th grade, and shall ensure that every pupil satisfactorily completes a refresher course in cardiopulmonary resuscitation before completion of the 12th grade. The bill also requires school boards to establish a waiver process for any pupil who is physically unable to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation.”

According to the American Heart Association:
• Emergency Medical Services (EMS) treats about 300,000 victims of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest each year in the U.S.
• Less than one-third of out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrest victims receive bystander CPR.
• Effective bystander CPR, provided immediately after sudden cardiac arrest, can double or triple a victim’s chance of survival.

What do you think about this idea? Should students be required to learn CPR as a condition to earning their high school diploma?

HB176 bars college students from voting in their college town

Posted in

HB 176 changes the laws relative to voting. It would amend the law to say that college students are no longer allowed to vote where they are attending school. This would repeal RSA 654:1, which states that:
I-a. A student of any institution of learning may lawfully claim domicile for voting purposes in the New Hampshire town or city in which he or she lives while attending such institution of learning if such student's claim of domicile otherwise meets the requirements of RSA 654:1, I.

HB39 ammends public school standards for an “adequate education” by removing arts education, world languages, health education..

Posted in

House Bill 39, sponsored by Rep. Ralph Boehm (R – Hillsborough District 27), proposes amending the public school standards for an “adequate education” by removing arts education, world languages, health education, and technology education (leaving only English, mathematics, science, social studies, and physical education). The bill states that schools would be welcome to continue to offer these programs, but at their own expense.

Thoughts?

The Daily Beast's report ranking UNH as number one "Most druggiest colleges" is fatally flawed

Recently, an article published by The Daily Beast ranked UNH number one in a list of the "Most Druggiest Colleges." The article was picked up by many New England newspapers, including the Boston Globe's Boston.com, The Berkshiere Eagle, and even UNH’s Student Newspaper.
